BRITAIN'S SUGAR SUPPLIES
NEED FOR HOME PRODUCTION..
Sir Herbert Matthews, secretary of the Central Chamber, of, Agriculture., writes.
If there were only one sugar beet fao- tory available for British enterprise in this country this year, dealing with, say, 1,000 tons of sugar beetroots per day dur ing the winter campaign, it would be possible to invite British farmers to de- vote 16,000 acres of their land to this crop. Such an serbage would yield ́ati Tenet 100,000 tons of topped and washed roots, from which not less than 12.000 tons of sugar would be produced, a'
This quantity would supply the require- ments of one million people in the United Kingdom for one year, based upon the war ration fixed by the Ministry of Food, In addition, the by-products, namely, dried slices and molasses, would amount: to about 8,000 tons, a valuable feeding: stuff for dairy cows, which, according to important American tests, materially in creases the yield of milk. There would}* falso be 75,000 tons of tope and leaves, which are also a valuable feeding stuff. Møreover, half a million pounds sterling would go into the pockets of the British people for fabour and materials in con- nection with the production and distribu- tion of the sugar, and many subsidiary. industries would ba stimulated or called into being.
Britain is the only large, consuming country which depends entirely upon sugar net produced at home. The sugar supply of the United Kingdom is ex- tremely precarious. England contributes. nothing to the world stock. She is always helping herself to the sugar basin, and never putting anything in. Every pound of sugar consumed in the United King- dom means that somebody has to go with out, or with less than would otherwise be possible. Sarely this selfish policy should cease, and England, in her own interests and the interest of the world, should add to her existing staples a crop for which the soil and climate are so ad mirably suited.
THE RISE IN SILVER
"The causes, and effects of the adyanes of 140 per cent. in the price of silver during the past five years are discussed in a recent article in The Times - It la pointed out that the rise has been dua partly to a decrease in supply, but chiefly Po su increase in demand, "The Indian demand "bas dominated the situation. The writer as:-
The question now is whether the pro sent price-level for silver is likely to be mantained or even to
to go bigber still. `But the answer really depends on the extent of the continued demand from India and China, and time alone can show. Among experts in the silver market no confident opinion is expressed. It is accepted, in say case, that the price cannot fall below 476 for a very long time to come, owing to the provision "already mentioned in the Pittman Act; and it is thought hard- ly likely that any early fall would be below 60d, even if the present ("' record 'ʼn price is not exceeded. A further rise would complicate the currency problems' of gold- standard countries as well as those of silver-asing countries, such as China and India. Owing to the high prios of silver, China can purchase goods abroad more cheaply than she can produce them, and gets less monej (a smaller amount of ailver) for her exports. This may be com sidered to be to our advantage," since" if encourages British exports to China and discourages imports. As regards Indis, the rise in the value of the rupes bas already greatly hampered the Indian ex party trade, while, on the other hand, it has benefited our own export trails to India Lancashire, in particolar, stands to benefit from any further rise in the price of silver, and, therefore, of the rupee But the tea plantation companies stand to lose, for they sell their produce in sterling and have to remit a large pro portion of the proceeds to meet their ex- penditure in rupees; therefore the riss in the cost of ripees is A „AUTIOUS
matter for them, and it bas resulted in the price of Indian tea being raised in London. For our own domestic currency purposes it is necessary to bear in (mind that, s 66d. per ounce, or only a further ribs of about 2d. or ad per ounce, it would begin to pay to melt down English silver. coins and sell them as metal. This would result in driving the existing silver coin- age out of circulation," and compel the Government either to mine something dif ferent or to substitute paper sotem
