BRITAIN'S SUGAR SUPPLIES
NEED FOR HOME PRODUCTION..
Sir Herbert Matthews, secretary of the Central Chamber, of, Agriculture., writes.
If there were only one sugar beet fao- tory available for British enterprise in this country this year, dealing with, say, 1,000 tons of sugar beetroots per day dur ing the winter campaign, it would be possible to invite British farmers to de- vote 16,000 acres of their land to this crop. Such an serbage would yield ́ati Tenet 100,000 tons of topped and washed roots, from which not less than 12.000 tons of sugar would be produced, a'
This quantity would supply the require- ments of one million people in the United Kingdom for one year, based upon the war ration fixed by the Ministry of Food, In addition, the by-products, namely, dried slices and molasses, would amount: to about 8,000 tons, a valuable feeding: stuff for dairy cows, which, according to important American tests, materially in creases the yield of milk. There would}* falso be 75,000 tons of tope and leaves, which are also a valuable feeding stuff. Møreover, half a million pounds sterling would go into the pockets of the British people for fabour and materials in con- nection with the production and distribu- tion of the sugar, and many subsidiary. industries would ba stimulated or called into being.
Britain is the only large, consuming country which depends entirely upon sugar net produced at home. The sugar supply of the United Kingdom is ex- tremely precarious. England contributes. nothing to the world stock. She is always helping herself to the sugar basin, and never putting anything in. Every pound of sugar consumed in the United King- dom means that somebody has to go with out, or with less than would otherwise be possible. Sarely this selfish policy should cease, and England, in her own interests and the interest of the world, should add to her existing staples a crop for which the soil and climate are so ad mirably suited.

Among experts in the silver market no confident opinion is expressed.
