PROPOSED SCOTCH WHISKY SYNDICATE.

ATTEMPT TO "CORNER" OLD HIGHLAND MALTE.

The improvement which has taken place in the ontlook for the Sotoh whisky trade as a result of, first, the recovery in the consumption, aud, second, the partial depletion of the hoars stacks of old whisky, has stimulated speculative interest in the commodity, says a correspondent London paper. At one time quite a large businos was done in the buying and selling of single whiskios lying at distillery, ownership possession of a delivery being constitutes to such speculation, in part at

order, and that least, the great "boom" which culminated towards the end of 1898 was due. The "boom" was fostered by the Scottish banks, which lent money freely on the searity of the whisky lying in distillers warehouses, with the result that a bage edifice of credit was erected an comparatively small cash basis. When the ineritable collapse come the

single whiskies were seriously depreciated and. the depression has continued down to the present day, Highland malt whiskies bondod in 1897, 1898, an 11894 being purchasable at little more than original cast, without taking into account interest on the capital involved. While this depreciation has proved a serious sustior for the distillers and holders of such. whiskin, it has operated entirely in four of blenders, who have been able to acquire their supplies of raw material on unusually easy terios. Blenders who had hitherto been in the habit of holding stocks to cover their talting requiramauts for month, or, perlas,
