The Exhibition is like whatever the visitor wishes to masider it; it may be an illustrated of samples with numbers and Lawes, to those

was the impossibility of maintaining that con- visitors who have not understood how edition after, the war of the League which exhibition is to be enjoyed. Or it may be decimated the anke of the French nobility that led Henry IV to abolish the Lancers. With the exception of one abortive attempt to, recivo them in the middle of the eighteenth century, Lancers disappeared from the French Army until the Napoleonic wara. In the meantime Frederick the Great having even the advan fagoous use made of the waspon by the Pokis, had given the lance, to a portion of his cavalry, and ultimately formed a regiment of Lancers. The Austring had followed his example, aud had established three regiments of "Uhlans," 65 they were called. After the partition of Poland, in 1807, many Poles entered the French service, and a body of Polish Light Horses was formed, which Napoleon two years later converted into Lancers. They formed part of the Imperial Guard, and showed splendid devotion to ther master on occasion. In 1819 Napoleon created a second Lancer regiment out of part of the Royal Dutch Guard, and they were known as the "Scarlet Lancers". This method, of arazing cavalry proyed so, serviceable that in 1811 Napoleon ersated more Lancer regimente, and attached one to each division of Cuirassients:

To express it in 'a nutshell, the exhibition is a replica of Japan, prefecture by prefecture, mach trying its best to be mom attractive then the rest. Most of the great exhibitions in the western world have been, priinarily, enormous holiday gatherings, and the craving for amuse ment bas influenced the whole spirit of the undertaking. From the "Colinderies" at Earl's Court in 1887, down to the "World's Fair" at Buffalo last year, the exhibits formed rather a mere background, while the foremost features were the games, side shows, pastimes of every conceivable kind; just as the world- Prince's Building No. 1. renowned Aquarium at Westminster drew Hongkong, 10th April, 1903. /re
