THE

THE most predominant feature to affect the Hongkong Stock Ex- change this year was the raising of the Bank Rate last September, which coupled with events that happened as back BB 1955 far thoroughly depressed the market, especially in the latter part of the year.

The initial cause of the market's chronic weakness was the Big Three Banks' decision in August, 1955, to impose credit restrictions in the Colony.. This all but killed speculative buying on the market and the in- crease in interest rates this year was the crowning blow to speculators as well as investors.
