WINDOW TO A NEW WORLD

The world was blasted into the atomic age at Hiroshima some years ago, scientists predicted peacetime use of this new force would aid mankind Immeasurably. Now, a little more than five years after, true to their forecast, uranium aloms are playing an im- portant role in industrial research.

A new technique, known as "shadow-casting," makes

it possible for man to see and photograph particles which formerly were not visible even when magnissed as much as 100,000 times.

After obtaining authorisation from the Atomic Energy Commission, scientists at the Goodrich Research Centre, Bruchsville, Ohlo, are spraying objects with fillings from a quarter-pound rod of uranium. Thus, they become corted on one side with a thin film of metal, while areas on the other side receive no coating and appear as deep shadows on pictures which are made on plates in an electron microscope. The outcome of the studies, it is hoped, will bring tougher and longer-wearing rubber for use in existing products and development of new items.

BEFORE the precious uranium rod is put to work in industrial research, it is checked for radioactivity

with Geiger counter by Dr. W. L. Davidson. Pur-

chase was under Atomic Energy Commission licence.
