The West Indies, in their sacond innings at Lords today, lost four wickets for 147 runs at lunch. The shocks to England yesterday following so closely on the victory at Manchester have made the current Test against the West Indies one of the most gripping since the war. West Indies entered on the third, day in an over- whelmingly strong position, all wickets intact, a lead of 220 runs and three days to play.

They could therefore carry on at their own pace, con- solidating the position while Goddard had the advantage of being able to declare when he wished should the pitch show signs of becoming difficult.
