Analysis Of

Washington, Oct. 20. An analysis of the Bikini Atom bomb tests shows that soldiers in dugouts or tanks could weather the blast and heat of nearby atomic bombs and carry on fighting. This was disclosed in an interview today by Major-General An- thony J. McAuliffe, a member of the joint Re- search and Development Board on weapons and deputy commander of the joint task force at Bikini.

The General said that the degree of protection against instantaneous radiation and high penetration of the rays or later radioactivity would depend on the relative position of the dugouts and their 'construction.

The study showed that tanks, of feree heat and the blast. bul artillery and other heavy equip rubber tyres near the target cer ment near the aerial-burst first tre showed remarkable resistance test bomb were practically un- A creat deal of wrapped foods damaged. "The bomb's greatest use is on a large target concentrated in one area. It has too wide an area of action to use tactically to dren when our own troops are close la the area."

The General's conclusions, based on his own observations and on the recently completed report by the Army ground forces might not, he said. be entirely conclusive in relation to Army equipmen: | heeause the tests were carried out Plastics changed their texture, primarily under naval warfare were fired or fused under the Bash on —Renter
