SINGAPORE SHIPPING BOTTLENECK QUERIES

London, Oct. 14. Centralisation of control was criticised by Conser

vative members today as being the reason for the holdup of shipping at Singapore. Sir Waldron Smithers asked if the Minister of Transport, Mr. Alfred Barnes, would make a statement on details of the delay which he had sent him, and Sir Patrick Hannon asked for. the circumstances under which two ships, Sam Trent and Savigna, were bought from the United States Government for the conveyance of Pearl Harbour coaldust for Singapore, and 8,000 tons of this article consigned there. He asked whether, as the coaldust was re-consign- ed to Batavia, what would be the cost of this transaction to the British taxpayer.

Mr. Barnes replied "There was serious congestion during the summer at Singapore, with consequent delay in discharge of vessels. The handling capacity of the port, owing to labour
