Of Commercial Cotton
(By Sydney Gampell, Reuters City Editor)
London, Oct. 14.′′
The world consumption of commercial cotton in N.Y. Stock
the last season was estimated at 23,200,000 bales. France, Russia, Italy, China and Japan
expanded their consumption considerably
while consumption in India declined slightly. Throughout Europe and Asia, however, India's consumption exceeded prewar. The total con- sumption outside the United States this season is forecast at about 26,700,000 compared with last season of 23,200,000 and (the seasons. be. gin in August) 1944 of 21,000,000.
London Stock Exchange
London, Oct 14.
A mixture of influences pre- vailed in early dealings on the stock market today.
The alternative plan to full nationalization put forward by the four main lines stimulated British railways, which in some instances were marked up 34' but higher levels attracted profit- taking and early improvement was not fully maintained.
German
potash bonds were dull, following the denial of recent rumours that funds were available for debt service purposes, but the downward movement attracted fresh buyers and the initial losses "were subsequently recovered.
Orange Free State gold mines moved sharply lower, reflecting the statement by Mr. R. H. Mor ley, Chairman of the Commercial Exchange of South Africa, that if higher taxation continues, the Free State mines may never open. There was, however, no selling
pressure.
The turnover in industrials was very small, the only feature being inquiry in iron and steel issues.
The United States Department of Agriculture expects that stocks. of United States cotton ac cumulated during the last season in China, Japan, Italy and France will be consumed during this reason.
World production of cotton this tentatively estimated at
Season
20,600,000 bales compared with 19,200,000 in 1945, the prewer average of 20,700,000 and the 1937 record of 36,500,000 bales.
