Abbeville, where the German advance turned northward towards the Chan- nel ports, was bombed to pieces by the German air force before their troops seized the town, according to a Red Cross man who has just left northern France.

He said: "The last time I saw Abbeville it was one vast desolation of smouldering ruins, with shattered streets strewn with dead and dying women and children.

"The Germans bombed it apparently without thought of military objec- tives, dropping high explosive and incendiary bombs and incendiary darts which shoot about like jumping crackers."—Reuter.
