IS MARCH HITLER'S LUCKY MONTH?

March is popularly supposed to be, there was the same feverish military Hitler's lucky month. It wasn't such a preparation going on behind the Ger- lucky month for Cæsar.

man línes in France.

On the fateful Ides of March (the 15th) Caesar was stabbed to death by the conspirators in the Senate house in Rome.

On March 21, 1918, another great German offensive was launched, an enormous wave of men and tanks and guns that curled irresistibly over the The night before the armour of French and British lines, that crested Mars in Caesar's palace, had rattled in and broke on the Marne and then, ominous warning: the armour of that like any wave, its force spent, washed same War God who was father to Ro-backward and backward and back- mulus, builder of Rome, and whose ward until, eight months later, the name Romulus gave to the third month in the year.

Cæsar, too, had ideas of world do- mination.

Certainly the record of Hitler's March achievements is impressive enough to justify superstition.

On March 1, 1935, just over two years after Hitler came to power, the Saar was returned to Germany, first of the territorial accretions by which the Greater Germany. of Hitler has grown.

I wonder if Hitler remembers that?

Or that on March 18, 1890, Bismarck was dsimissed as Chancellor, and that sequence of events began which has brought Germany to Hitler and to war for the second time in half a century?

But nothing did happen. Hitler was lucky.

Emboldened by his success, two days later he had Goering reveal the exis- tence of the German Air Force, which had been building in secret for near- ly two years.

Instantly the German propagandists went to work on it, ballyhooing its power and destructiveness until it be came the nightmare of Europe, paralysing the minds and wills of statesmen when Hitler threatened to unleash it.

He waited two years before bring- ing off his next March coup.

On March 12, 1938, German troops poured into Austria, Goering's Air Force roared over Vienna, and withic 24 hours, without firing a shot, Hit- ler was able to announce the annexa- tion of Austria to the Reich, and to use for the first time the name Grea- ter Germany.

And a year and three days later, on March 15, 1938, the troops moved, the planes roared again, this time into and over Prague, and in deflance of Hit- ler's every

promise at Munich six months before, Czecho-Slovakia was wiped off the map.

Another Ides of March is little over a week away, and the armour of the War God is rattling again. Rumours are flying thick and fast about Europe that, March, is set for the great offen- sive which Hitler and the other Ger- man leaders have been threatening ever since war began. The German frontiers of Holland and Belgium will- be closed: Behind those frontiers, be-. hind the frontiers of Luxemburg and Switzerland, observers rèport feverish military preparation.

March may be a lucky month for Hitler. But is it a lucky month for Germany?
