LORD ZETLAND UNABLE TO SHARE GANDHI'S OPTIMISM

London, To-day.

AN IMPORTANT STATEMENT on the constitution- al problem in India was made by Lord Zetland, Secretary of State for India, in an exclusive in- terview with the "Sunday Times.”

Lord Zetland appealed to leaders of the Congress

party to descend from idealism to realism. If the negotiations were to prove fruitful there must

be on all sides a spirit of compromise.

"The British Government cannot compel this spirit and can only plead for it, as I do,” Lord Zet- land declared.

"The breakdown in the talks be- tween the Viceroy and Mr. Gandhi disappointed and bewildered me but

I am glad to hear the door is not closed."

After referring to Mr. Gandhi's statement at the end of his talks with the Viceroy, Lord Zetland continues: "I can only say that while I admire Mr. Gandhi's optimism I am un- happily unable to share it as long as the Congress party maintains its pre- sent attitude."
