OWN BOMB WRECKS U-BOAT'S ATTACKER

An R.A.F. pilot who attacked a U-boat, missed it by 20ft, with his

first bomb, wrecked his own 'plane VIGILANCE

with the blast of his second, and was captured by the submarine, tells his

dramatic story in a letter from a war SAVES

prisoners' camp

in

Germany. His

father has been presented to the

King and congratulated on his son's CONVOY

exploit, according to the "Daily Mail."

The pilot was first reported "miss- ing, presumed dead." His letter reads:-

"I was taken prisoner while on a bombing raid. I went out in my ma- chine to look for the submarine, which was supposed to have sunk one of our merchant ships.

"Three machines went out, and searched for the submarine but falled to find it, and started back to the ship.

"My observer, however, suddenly shouted to me, "There's a merchant ship on the horizon; let's her,'

"Well, it was about 20 miles away, but we went. When we were almost on top of it my chap said, 'Go low so that I can see her name.'

"Suddenly, just as I got alongside the ship, I spotted a submarine the far side. Up I went, but the submarine had already half sub- merged, leaving me no time to get to a safe height to bomb from So I took a chance and bombed from a low height to secure a hit.

HAD TO SWIM

"My first bomb missed by about 20ft. I hit the sea at 200 m.ph. In a steep dive and went straight down without stopping.

"I tried to get out of the cockpit, but was jammed in a stuck roof. When I was almost out of breath I managed to break free and come to the surface. "My observer, however, was killed at once. I never saw him again, though I looked for him.

"I then found that I was nearly a mile away from the merchant ship, in icy cold water, with flying clothes on and not a little knocked about.

The vigilance of a lifeboat's which saved a convoy from a floating mine, is described by its coxswain.

The lifeboat had been 40 hours at sea and travelled 130 miles panying a limping mined steamer to

port.

The youngest of the crew, the coxs- wain said, spotted the mine in the track of the convoy. Immediately the signalman flashed the one word "Mine." It was picked up by the leading boat of the convoy, which of signalled instructions to the rest the convoy. The ships altered course and proceeded safely.

AGREEMENT REACHED

London, To-day. The British and French trade dele- gations, which have been negotiating on the methods of close economic co- operation between the two countries, have reached agreement on points of principle.

The agreements will now be sub- mitted to the two Governments for approval, and the French delegation has already returned to Paris for this purpose. Reuter.
