Confusion Bay Should Win Main Autumn Champions Rose Elect And Navylight Not Participating

The Thirteenth Extra Race Meeting to be held to- morrow under the auspices of Hong Kong Jockey Club will ring down the curtain on the 1939 racing season.

These two pontes will be running on equal terms; whereas Triumphant Day, conceded 10 lbs. to Bamn Bay on the previous ocen- sion. With the shorter distance, however, I think Triumphant Day will avenge its pre- vious defeat.

Lancashire Chips, which was third in the New Bridge Handicap at the 11th Extra Meeting, is looking very fit at the moment

CHAMPIONS: 1-1/4 MILES The programme opens with the first Champions race of the day, in which only China ponies that have started in at least three extra meetings since January 1, 1930, and winners at extra meetings in 1939, will compete.

This race will be deprived of a good deal of interest owing to the fact that Rose E'ect, 1939 Derby winner and Champion pony, is atill on the walking list and Navylight, Hong Kong St. Leger winner, is not eligible owing to its failure to comply with the require-

ments of this race. This is due to lameness after the Hong Kong Derby.

I expect to see the following facing the starter:-

Confusion Bay (Mr. Black) Evo of Harvest (Mr. Hearne) Moonlight Vlow (Mr. Pih)

Galaxy (Mr. Chao)

Rose Emily (Mr. Encarnacao)

RACE NO. 3. DILATORY

HANDICAP:

ONE MILE This race is reserved for Subscription

griffins of this season that have not won more than $1,000 in stakes.

For its win in the Glasgow Handicap (Six furlongs), Smiling Time has been penalised by 8 lbs., ie, 168 lbs., but, as it will again be in the capable hands of the champlon jockey, has a chance of repeating its pre- vious success. It should meet with serious opposition, however. Matador (Mr. Liang) has had its weight increased by 5 lbs. for coming in third in the Castle Peak Handicap (Second Section), and should have a big say here provided Mr. Llang does not keep It too far behind during the race, but Gog (Mr. Necda) has been SOL unreliable

in its outings lately that I don't know what to say about it.

The finish should be fought out be tween these three ponies.

RACE NO. 4.

HONGKONG

SUB-GRIFFINS AUTUMN CHAMPIONS: 1-1/4 MILES

This race is confined to subscription grif-

Mr. Heare, neverthe- less, can be relied on to get the best out of his mount, and the race should prove inter- esting.

Moonlight View should have no dimculty in taking the other minor position.

I nominate Confusion Bay to win, with Eve of Harvest second and Moonlight View third.

RACE NO. 2. LAGGARDS'

HANDICAP:

This event is confined to "C" Class, Aus- tralian subscription ponies that have started in at least two extra meetings during 1939, winners barred

Pumpernickel, which will again be ridden by Mr. Proulx, has been given top weight of 168 lbs., and, although this pony ran un- placed in the Auld Reekie Handicap over the mile in its last outing, I think it should win as the opposition does not seem to br strong enough to cause an upset, though Brutus (Mr. Pih), which was an also ran

In view of the easy manner in which King Kong (Mr. Chao) walked away with the St. Leger, there is little doubt that it will be made hot favourite." Mr. Choo knows the capabilities of his mount, and whilst I am prepared to give Musketeer (Mr. Llang) a fighting chance in view of the shorter dis- tance, I foresee another win for King Kong. Celtic Star (Mr. Encarnacao). Kut Cheung (Mr. S. L. Sung) and Guinness Time (Mr. Needa) will probably be the other three starters. Celtic Star come in second in the St. Leger, and there is no reason why it should not place in the same position again, unless Musketeer reveals better finishing qualities.

RACE NO. 5. TARDY HANDICAP:

ONE MILE

This is the first log of the "Dally Double," and, with $7,523 brought for. ward from the previous meeting, thera should be much interest in this event. Humdrum Eve (Mr. Plb) is given top weight of 169 lbs. followed by Jennifer (Mr. Proulx) and Rob Roy with 107 lbs, each and for this reason alone they should be disre- | garded.

Mr. Li Po-chun has entered two ponies and I expect him to send Expansion Time out under Mr. Needa, as it is his best pony for the distance, and it has a good chance of a win here.

Then there is Potentate, which will be ridden by Mr. Encarnacao. This combina- tion should be prominent at the finish, Lan- cashire Lass (Mr. Chao) is also a dangerous contender, judging on its last performance when it came in a close third to Peaceful View and Jober when they dead-heated, ·

Gladiator (Mr. Hearne) should also be in the limelight in the final run home, although it is a bit old.

I nominate Expansion Time to win with Potentate second and Lancashire Lass third,

RACE NO. 6. QUEENSLAND

AUTUMN CHAMPIONS: 1-1/4 MILES

This is the last Championship race of the day, and, as Lucky Lad, the champion pony. has not qualified for this event. It may, well

Courting Eve (Mr. Pih) Lancashire Chips (Mr. Hearno) A Grand Time (Mr. Black) Baffin Bay (Mr. P. P. Botelho) Triumphant Day (Mr. Llang) Chiltern (Mr. Encarnacao) Criffel (Mr. Needs) Tornado Star (Mr. Pan). After its brilliant win in the Fremantle St. Leger, Baffin Bay should be strongly sup ported, but there is Triumphant Day, Rooty, Hill Derby winner and second pony in the -Leger, to remember.

Lanark Handicap over the mile with Mr. Yuen on top at the last meeting, should give a good account of itself under Mr. Black. The race is very open and I think the finish will be fought out between Baffin Bay, Triumphant Day and Lancashire Chips.

RACE NO. 7.

LAST CHANCE

HANDICAP: ONE MILE This is the second leg of the "Daily Double", and a small fortune awaits those who make the right connection. Rose Flana (Mr. Encarnacao) and Taxing Master (Mr. Chao), the first and, second ponies in the Gerbal Handicap (First Section) at the last meeting, have been penalised by 17 and 19 lbs. respectively and, very much doubting their ability to win at such weights, I would carrying less suggest looking for ponies weight.

Scenic View lost to Laughing Girl in the Gorbals Handicap (Second Section) by å neck when carrying 108 lbs. and 18 its weight has been reduced by 21 lbs. It should have a very good chance of winning here. There is, however, National Pride Tang) to be reckoned with as this pony, which dislodged its rider, was expected to do well at the previous meeting.

Boolat Bay (Mr. Needa) is also good enough to win and should not be ignored, while Dawn Star (Mr. Pan), which has not done anything of note lately, if it produces some of its old form, should be very near at the finish.

Galveston Bay, which came in third to Taxing Master, will have a change of Jockey In Mr. P. P. Botelho, and may do well as Mr. Botelho is good in handling lazy ponies.

I nominate Scenic View to win, with Boolat Bay second and National Prido third. RACE NO. 8. FINALE HANDICAP: ONE MILE

The final race of the day and the year is confined to "D" Class China ponies that have started in at least two extra meetings during 1939 with the stipulation that winners during 1939 and subs, of this season are barred.

At the previous meeting Night View lost to Chatterbox by a short head in the Gallaw. gate Handicap (First Section) whereas Gold Coin was unplaced. These two ponies have now been given top weight of 188 lbs, and, as they will be ridden by Messrs. Pih and Liang respectively, the finish should be fought out between these two ponies with Night View having a slight advantage.

Valorous, which will be taken out by Mr. Ip Kul-ying, is quite capable of causing an upset as it is carrying the light weight of 140 lbs. and Piet Hein (Mr. Needn), which surprisingly came in third in the Castle Peak Handicap over the two mile post, may give the two top weighters a good fight if it does not win.

My nomination is Night View to win, with Gold Coin second and Piet Hein third.

MISS EARDLEY NOT TO PLAY LEAGUE HOCKEY

The **China Mail" learns that Miss Decima Eardley, former Shanghai Inter port hockey player, who arrived here re- cently and turned out for "Y" against St. Andrew's last week, will play no further League hockey this season.

Miss Buchanan has accordingly been pro- moted from the junior team to fill the left- wing berth for to-morrow's match against Recreio.

Miss K. Pocock is also unavailable for to- 'morrow and Miss Stokes will play at left-

half in her stead. :
