CAMPAIGN AMONG THE NEUTRALS

When his attention was called in the Commons to the intensified campaign for pro- motion of German trade in Holland and the Scandina- vian countries, the President of the Board of Trade re- plied: "I have received re- ports of the nature indicated. The Government are fully alive to the importance of promoting the United Kingdom export trade to the countries mentioned and other over- seas markets.
With that object my Depart. ment is opening discussions with representatives of exporting in- dustries with a view to facilitat- Ing their operations.
I am in constant touch with the appropriate departments on måtters affecting export_trade."

Asked further if he was aware that German industrial organisations were circulating firms in neutral countries offering facilities for sisting their trade as against the trade of Britain, Mr. Stanley observ- ed: "There is a certain amount doubt whether the Germans are living up to the promises made in those circulars."

JAPANESE ALIGNMENT WITH DOLLAR
London, To-day.
The Japanese decision to align the yen with the dollar instead of the pound, has created no surprise or dis- satisfaction in London; fin- ancial circles on the contrary regard it as the logical step.
With Britain and France both war there must be a certain amount of sterling and the franc. The view therefore is that Japan is only fol- lowing an example already set by the Scandinavian countries in align- ing their currencies to the dollar, which, in fact, is the only major currency at present well outside the war's orbit. London, October 6. The German wireless yesterday stated that German troopą, on the western front awoke to observe opposite them a large notice 'put up by the French troops. It said: "Look out comrades, the English are coming."

Early reports of the medical aminations of the new group called up for registration for military ser- vice under the National Service (Armed Forces) Act confirm · evid- ence of the remarkable improvement in national health which was reveal- ed when the 20-year age group was registered last June.
The extent of this
improvement,
as compared with a generation ago, is demonstrated when the results are studied in relation to those revealed when conscription was introduced in the last war.
In. 1917, only 65 per cent. of youths of 18 were allocated to Grade
Chinese vanguards on the Hunan- Hupeh border destroyed three Japan-One. ese army lorries on the highway be- tween Yanglowsze and Wullpal, north-east of Yoyang and killed ten Japanese soldiers. Central News.
The Polish Consul-General in London has requested all Polish citi- zens in Britain to appear before a recruiting commission for military service with the Polish Army in France.
The order affects all those liable for military service between, the ages bf 18 and 45.--Reuter.
