TRIBUNAL TRY FORMER

London, Oct. 14. Capt. Franz von Rintelen, formerly a German naval in- telligence officer and head of the German spy system in the United States in the last war, appeared before an enemy alien tribunal in North London yesterday.

He satisfied the tribunal that he had no Nazi sympathies. He is not to be interned, but will be subpect to cer- tain conditions governing enemy aliens.

Adml. Sir Reginald Hall, the form- er Director of Naval, Intelligence, who, in the last war sent the trick message which led to Capt. von. | Rintelen's arrest and internment, at- tended the tribunal to vouch for his loyalty to Britain.

Capt. von Rintelen told

a répre- sentative of the Daily Telegraph yes- terday that he had placed his ser- vices whole heartedly at the disposal of the British Government. “I am dis- gusted with the present regime in Germany," he said. "In my opinion they are worse than gangsters. I have offered to form an international divi- sion to fight in France.”

Capt. von Rintelen has been lying in a club near King's Cross for some years.-Daily Telegraph."

-A daring attempt to escape from Victoria Remand Prison was made this morning.

The prisoner scaled the wall opposite the Magistracy” at about 9 a.m., jumped 20 feet to the archway over the entrance to the. Magistracy and from there to the road and ran up Arbuthnot Road with Chinese constables and a European police sergeant, with.. revolver drawn, in pursuit.

As he turned down the steps leading from Arbuthnot Road into Wyndham Street, however, he slipped and

was recaptured be- fore he could recover.
