club would have brought Declarer down to three trumps (one fewer than his own number), rather than gamble that his partner had the club King (we believe that West was absolutely marked with the King of clubs), East decided on the "safe" lead of,a trump.

A VERY UNUSUAL CONTRACT To-day's hand, again taken from the Masters' Pair tournament at As- bury Park, NJ., depicts a very re- markable occurrence. In spite of the fact that his East opponent opened the bidding with a perfectly legitimate spade did, Waldemar von Zedtwitz daringly contracted for four spades. And now we must report that once again the defence, slipped, this time East being the player who was guilty of a blunder.

East's safe trump lead proved to be just the opposite, for Mr. von Zedt- witz was now able to extract the four remaining trumps and win the rest of the tricks with his diamonds.

While five diamonds would appear to be a safer contract on this hand, this did not prove to be the case, for at several tables South did be- come Declarer at five diamonds dou- bled and was defeated two tricks. when the West player trumped two spades.

MOONLIGHT RAIDERS

Chungking, To-day. Taking advantage of a brilliant moon, Japanese aircraft raided Sze- chwan last night.

One group flew over Wushan and Fengkieh and released a number of bombs.

A second group, from a base in Kiangsi, attempted to attack Chengtu but failed to reach the city.

The air raid alarm was raised in Chungking and called off early this morning. No planes appeared over the city.--Central News.
