U-BOAT SINKS EIRE (NEUTRAL) MOTOR-SHIP

London, To-day,

THE MINISTRY OF INFORMATION has released a statement on the sinking on Monday, Septem- ber 11, of the Inverliffy, a motorship of 9,400 tons, registered in Dublin and flying the Eire flag.

The ship was 270 miles south-west of Land's End and headed for the entrance to the English Channel when a German submarine opened fire on her.

on

Her master was then ordered board the U-boat with his papers. He went on board and was told that the cargo ship was carrying contraband and therefore the U-boat was going to sink her. *

The master protested, pointing out! that the ship was flying the flag of Elre, but the Germans took no no- tice.

The crew were put in their boats and the submarine sank the ship with a torpedo.

TAKEN TO TANKER The master and the crew in one boat were taken by the submarine to tanker nearby, which an American then picked up the other two life- boats.

Eire, it will he realised, has declared her neutrality-Reuter.

DRAPERS' CHARGES

London, To-day.

The Drapers' Chamber of Trade in London have decided to advise mem- Ibers that they should not increase prices for existing stocks by more than 5 per cent. on the average.

A small minority was in favour of there being no increase until traders were compelled to make one. Reuter.
