ANGLO-SOVIET DEFENCE PACT BELIEVED ON EVE OF COMPLETION
London, To-day.
The Soviet Ambassador in London, M. Maisky, who is at present in Moscow to report, left for London again on Sunday night and is expected to arrive here on Tuesday or Wednesday. In political circles, it is believed that this denotes that the deliberations that took place between Maisky and the British Ambassador, Sir Wil- liam Seeds, on the one hand, and the Soviet Gov- ernment on the other, have taken a favourable course and that nothing now stands in the way of an early announcement of Anglo-Soviet mutual aid obligations.
It is stated that the Prime
Minister, Mr. Neville Chamber: INSPECTOR
lain, will be in a position on Tuesday to make a short an- nouncement regarding the state of the Anglo-Soviet negotiations. It is believed that Britain and France are committed only to a guarantee of the western frontier of Soviet Russia but are giving no precise undertaking to go to aid the Soviet if she should be threatened by Japan.
It is recalled that the Franco- Russian agreement before 1914 was subject to this restriction.
The Anglo-Soviet agreement will represent a new alliance; the Franco-Soviet agreement will be an extension of an already existing military pact. Trans- Ocean.
