Nan looked at him, and curiously the old, nearly-forgotten doubt flashed across her mind. He was afraid. He was a coward. That was it. That was the doubt. She had feared it all along.
She tried to drive the thought away, but it persisted. Before she could atop. herself she said. "So! Afraid!"
