COMMANDER

Chang Fat-kwei Believed To Be Hankow's Choice
Hankow, To-day.
The Japanese forces from Bias Bay are pushing north in two columns, ac- cording to an announcement yesterday afternoon from the Generalis- simo's headquarters.
One column is heading towards Waichow from Namshan, via Pingshan,

The announcement also says that General Iwane Matsui, former com- mander-in-chief of the Japanese forces in Shanghai area, is now in command of the South China operations.
At the same time it is reliably reported that one of China's most promin
ent military leaders, who distinguished himself in the East Kwang- tung fighting in 1925, has now been appointed commander-in-chief of the Chinese forces in South China. (General Chang Fat-kwai, com mander of the famous "Ironsides," is presumably the new c.-in-c.).
General Yu Han-mou, commander of the 4th Route Army, hitherto in command in Kwangtung, will assist the new commander-in- chief. The new Chinese commander, whose identity official circles refuse to disclose, has the reputation in Chinese circles of being a "blessed commander who has never yet suffered defeat in his brilliant military career."
His thorough knowledge of conditions in East Kwangtung, it is also pointed out, will be an important asset in South China's resist-
