BOGUS "S OS CALLS" DUPE BRITONS
London, Sept. 11 land suddenly on business before
the S O S could be answered. Scores of Britons, whose relatives. have been abroad on holiday or business trips,, have been victimised by the authors of an ingenious racket.
“Your loved one is ill. Am look- ing after him (or her). Wire cash at once."
That is the message, ending with a name and the address of a post office, that has been received by them in the last few weeks.
The French police, who have taken the matter up, are satisfied that the messages emanate from a well-organized gang who make a point of studying the movements of foreigners arriving in France.
A trap reply was sent after consultation with the police, and when the agent of the gang ar÷| rived at the bank to collect the $1,000 'demanded he was arrest ed by an inspector of the Surete Nationale.
He has made a statement in- criminating 18 persons living in France and England, who are sup- posed to be the principals in the racket.
It has been found that the gang had an account with the Paris branch of a well-known English bank amounting to nearly a quar- ter of a million sterling.
