French soldiers on the Rhine frontier last evening were seen in full field equipment, completely ready for fighting, in positions to a depth of three kilometres in front of the Maginot Line. Civilians in the area are calm but serious, standing in the streets in small groups, having been told that in the event of hostilities, they will imme- diately be evacuated.
