“Your loved one is ill. Am look- ing after him (or her). Wire cash at once."
That is the message, ending with a name and the address of a post office, that has been received by them in the last few weeks.
The French police, who have taken the matter up, are satisfied that the messages emanate from a well-organized gang who make a point of studying the movements of foreigners arriving in France.
A trap reply was sent after consultation with the police, and when the agent of the gang ar÷| rived at the bank to collect the $1,000 'demanded he was arrest ed by an inspector of the Surete Nationale.
He has made a statement in- criminating 18 persons living in France and England, who are sup- posed to be the principals in the racket.
It has been found that the gang had an account with the Paris branch of a well-known English bank amounting to nearly a quar- ter of a million sterling.
