SENSE OF CHRISTIAN
HUMOUR
(Continued from page 7)
Well, of course, I have to laugh at this myself and Joe the Joker laughs with me, and pretty soon citizens are stopping to watch us, and some of them laugh with us, although they do not know what we are laughing at, but probably figure one of us just tells the other a dirty story.. Personally, I am laughing just at the idea of anybody having themselves. de- livered to Frankie Ferocious in a sack. and especially Joe the Joker but of course I have no idea Joe really means what he says.
"A
"Listen," Joe says finally. guy from St. Louis who is a. friend of mine is doing most of the sacking for Frankie Fero- cious. His name is Ropes Mc- Gonnigle. In fact." Joe says, "he is a very dear old pal of mine, and he has a wonderful sense of humour like me. Ropes. Me- Gonnigle has nothing whatever to do with sacking Freddy," Joe says, "and in fact he is very in- · dignant about it since he finds out Freddy is my brother, so he is anxious to help me play a joke on Frankie.
says, for
"Only last night,”
Joe "Frankie Ferocious sends Ropes and tells him he will appre- ciate it as a special favour if Ropes will bring me to him in a sack." "I suppose," Joe says, "that Frankie Ferocious hears from Rosa what Freddy is bound to tell her about my ideas on divorce" "I have very strict ideas on divorce," Joe says, "es- pecially where Rosa is concern- ed," I will see her in what's-this before I ever do her and Frankie Ferocious such a favour as giv- -ing her a divorce.
"Anyway," Joe the Joker says, "Ropes tells me about Frankie Ferocious propositioning him, so I send Ropes back to Frankie Ferocious to tell him he knows I am to be in Brooklyn to-morrow night," and furthermore, Ropes tells Frankie that he will have me în a sack in no time. And so he will," Joe says.
"Well," I say, "personally I see no percentage in being delivered to Frankie Ferocious in a sack, because as near as I can make out from what I read in the papers, there is no future for a guy in a sack that goes to Frankie Fero- cious. What I cannot figure out, I say, "is where the joke: on
Frankie comes in."
"Why," Joe the Joker says, "the joke is I will not be asleep in the sack, and my hands will not be ̈ tied, and in each of my hands I will have a John Roscoe, so when the sack is delivered to Frankie Ferocious and I pop out blasting away, can you not imagine the astonishment of Frankie ”””
Well, I can imagine this all right. In fact, when I get to thinking of the look of surprise that is bound to come to Frankie Ferocious's face when Joe the Joker comes out of the sack. I have to laugh, and Joe the Joker laughs right along with me. can see that it is a wonderful joke, and I am wishing I have a sense of humour like Joe.
-"Of course,” Joe says, “Ropes.

Judge Smith declared in his ad- dress that "To insure its strength, and success, an organized move- ment requires (1) a good purpose clearly stated, (2) an intelligent plan for achieving this purpose, (3) active co-operation in dance with the plan by the sons who compose the movement.
"The Christian Science move- ment has the first of these essen- tials in our Leader's writings on the nature and purpose of our Church. The second of these essentials (a practical plan con- ceived in wisdom) we have in our Church Manual. The third es- sential can be restated for movement as active and united efforts to communicate, demons- trate, and propagate the Science of Mindhealing.

For this essen-
tial, the responsibility rests on all Christian Scientists collectively. and individually.
The obliga-
tion to prove by its effects that our religion deserves its name is not limited to listed practition- ers, this obligation extends to all who are enrolled as Scientists."

The fact that the Christian Sci- ence denomination has 2781 bran- ches was cited and Miss M. Rosa- mond Wright, reported further for the year, “Good growth in our movement is shown through the organization and recognition of fifty-nine new churches and societies as
The branches of Mother Church, and six new university organizations.”
The Christian Science Board of Directors, in its message read by the retiring chairman, Mrs. Nelvia E. Ritchie, told Christian Scientists everywhere, "The in- spiring reports and testimonies

While these splendid evi- dences of progress give cause for rejoicing and we humbly bow our heads in gratitude to God for these proofs of His power and presence, yet as students of Christian Science we all realize that greater works are before us.

"It is our sacred duty and privilege to uphold righteous gov- ernment and to know that in reality divine Mind, with its attri- butes
of intelligence, wisdom, justice, and mercy, always guides and controls the avenues and channels through which govern- ment is expressed. As we
look. upon the apparent unrest and fer- mentation in the affairs of the world to-day, it is heartening and comforting to know that by obedi- ence to the teachings of our Mas- ter we can be conscious of the Government of divine Principle, and actually see this government made manifest in human affairs and universal peace established.”
William M. Bartlett, Secretary of the Trustees under the Will of Mary Baker Eddy, reported that sales of Mrs. Eddy's writings in 1936 increased 66 per cent. over sales in 1935. An accounting of expenditures in excess of $200,000 during the year ended April 30 was also rendered. In fulfillment of the purpose of the will, the items for which this fund was us- ed included assisting 33 churches and societies în erecting, pur- chasing or remodeling buildings; helping churches with lecture ac- tivities; and for free distribu- tion of Christian Science litera- ture.

Judge Frederick C. Hill, Chair- man of The Christian Science Board of Lectureship, reported 3216 lectures had been delivered. during the year ended April 30. Of these lectures, 53 were given in Africa, 54 in Australasia, seven in Hawaii, China, Japan and Manila, one în the City of Mexico, eight in Bermuda, Canal Zone
and West Indies, 242 in Great Britain and Ireland, 129 in Continental Europe and Scan- dinavia and 2722 in Canada, the United States and Alaska.

Church Edward L Ripley, Treasurer, expressed gratitude for the increased individuál - ac- tivity accomplished by members of The Mother Church and added that “in disbursing the funds so generously contributed for flood relief, excellent service was ren- dered by the Committees on Publication and the various relief workers."
In the report of the Clerk, Ezra W. Palmer, attention was drawn to the international appeal of Christian Science as indicated by the fact that the Instructions for filling out Applications for Mem- bership in The Mother Church are now available in 11 languages.
“The Mother Church, built on the Rock, Christ, is a mighty po- wer for righteousness,” he 'de clared. "It is leavening, trans- forming, and spiritualizing thought throughout the world, both within and without the Christian Science movement. Gradually, but surely, barren dogmas and false concepts which obstruct the flow of light from God to human consciousness, are fading away as the spiritual
idea of Church becomes clearer and dearer to the seekers for reality."

McGonnigle will be there to start blasting with me in case Frankie Ferocious happens to have any company. Ropes McGonnigle is practically furious,” he says, "notcious's house on Bedford-avenues only because of Freddy, but be- cause. Frankie Ferocious wishes a fine neighbourhood, although I seems that when Ropes McGon-
me sacked up, and Ropes is only too glad to help me out in every respect. I only wish, Joe says, "that Ropes is with us now to help us laugh.”
Then Joe the Joker goes on up the street, leaving me still laugh- ing from thinking of how-amaz- ed Frankie Ferocious will be when Jae bounces out of the sack and starts throwing slugs around and about, I do not hear of Joe from that time to this, but I hear the rest of the Ory from very reliable parties.
It is a nice three-storey house, in
hear the other neighbours never consider Frankie Ferocious any boost to property values in this section..
When the expressman takes the sack into Frankie's house, Fran- kie personally lugs it down into his basement, and there he „outs with a big John Roscoe and fires six shots into the sack, because
seems Ropes McGonnigle tips him off to Joe the Joker's plan to pop out of the sack and start blasting. I hear Frankie Fero-
nigle tells Frankie, of Joe the Joker's plan, Frankie tells Ropes what he is going to do with his own hands before opening the sack. Naturally Ropes speaks to Joe the Joker of Frankie's idea about filling the sack full of slugs, and Joe's sense of humour comes right out again.
So bound and otherwise as
