RAPID PROGRESS OF NEW GRAVING DOCK.
"A wonderful accomplishment" were the words Mr. G. R. New- combe, "Southampton docks and marine manager, used to express his admiration of the manner in which the Docks Engineers' De- partment were pushing ahead on the work of the world's greatest being graving dock which is built on the western shore at Millbrook. He was speaking at the seventh annual dinner of the department, held at the Chantry Hall, Southampton, and mention- ed that although operations were only commenced two months ago, the preliminaries were so far ad- vanced that the aetual work of excavation would be commenced in June. The manner in which they were rapidly enclosing the area with sheet piling was worthy of the greatest possible admira- tion.
The dinner, which was attend- ed by about 200 members of the department, had as chairman, Mr. F. E. Wentworth Shields, O.B.E., the docks engineer, who speaking of the work of the de- partment, said they were them- selves carrying out the great ex- tensions on the western shore. That was A compliment, which they must appreciate for, in- stead of calling in special en- gineers, the directors had en- trusted the work to their own de- partments, belleving that in it they had men of the necessary experience and zeal to see it through to a successful conclu- sion.

In that time further extensions had also been decided upon. They set out to build about 3,500 feet of new quay to accommodate, say, four big ships, but quite recently the directors decided to double that feet of quay, thus furnishing ac accommodation and build 7,000 commodation for eight such vessels. When they considered that meant adding about one- third to the quay accommodation of the existing docks they would appreciate that Southampton was going in a year or two to be a much more important port than in the past. (Applause),
Now they had been called upon to carry out yet another great work in building a graving dock which would be by far the largest in the world. It would
