HIT SUBMERGED CORAL,
After covering a 'distance of 124 miles in four days in a small sail- Ing dinghy and encountering a few minor difficulties
cn route, three bronzed yachtsmen arrived back recently in Port Dickson. writes the Straits Times.
They were Messrs. R. V. N. Shutte, G. H. Wood and V. J. H. Brunt members of the Port Dick aon Yacht Club, who elected to spond the Chinese New Year holl days at son in the Maravi, one of the club's sailing dinghies.
They sailed down the coast, carrying the necessary food, water and clothes required to enable them to sleep either in the boat or ashore. They set off at 3.30 p.m. on Monday, February 16, in a calm sea with a fresh westerly wind blowing. At 7.15 p.m. they drop- ped anchor at Mr. R. M. Robert-

NEWS.
Climax to Misfortunes in S. Africa.
UNPRECEDENTED SERIES.
Capetown, March 12. The unprecedented series of mis- fortunce which have dogged the tour of the M.C.C. team in South Africa reached a climax to-day, when
was received from England of the death of the infant child of Voce, the Notts player.
news
This sad news, coming on the eve of the team's departure for home, has cast deep gloom over the whole party.
Vote
has
many
received messages of sympathy, not only from his team-mates, but from the many friends he has made in South Africa.

son's bungalow near Cape Rachado Registration of First
and took on Mr. Shutte with pro- visions and water.
The sea ran heavy towards night and the crew had to resort to ball- ing. One hour spells were spent at the holm throughout the night.
Morning dawned with a break- fast of hard boiled eggs, wet bread and beer. The yachtamen had covered 47 miles on the first day and night.
At 9 a.m. they beached at the Malnecn Swimming Club. To wards midday they put to sea ngain, deciding to cruise -round the Malacca islands for the next two days before returning home.
After beaching at Pulau Uppi, where they rested for a few hours, they went on to Malacca town and slept ashore. The following day they sailed round Pulau Besar, Pulau Undan nad returned to Malacca after covoring 28 miles.
10
The third day they hit a sub- merged coral but escaped without damage. They beached at the Kampong Kuala Linggi and slept in an empty house for the night. The distance covered was 81 miles. On the fourth day they arrived at Port Dickson Yacht Club, after covering 18 miles. They came to the conclusion, that yachtsmen contemplating a similar trip must consider tides; the impracticability of night sailing; non-shaving as a protection against sunburn and the necessity of minimising baggage and arranging for hot meals,
DERBY SYNDICATE IN DANZIG.
"Zoppot Has Possibilities of Monte Carlo.'
GOVERNMENT SUPPORT.
the
The syndicate which is promot- ing the big sweepstake on the Derby (Brooms International Sports Association) is making its headquarters at Zoppot, In Free State of Danzig.
"Zoppot has all the possibilities of Monte Carlo," said Mr. John J. Hamilton (one of the directors) to a News-Chronicle representative.
"We propose to make the town
a centre for yachting, racing, ten- nis and golf. Virtually the Gov- ernment of Danzig is in partner- ship with us.
"A sports club has been estab- lished and tickets for the sweep- stakes can be bought only by members or associate members of the club. It is a club sweepstakes. Membership costs £1 and associate membership one Danzig gulden (10d.)."
Miss Joyce Wethered, the golfer, is another example (of women's so-called challenge to men.) She plays a straight, perfect game, but she would be quite outclassed by a. man of equal attainments, because she could not drive so far. And so it is in every other field of sport: -D. Wilson MacArthur.

"Duck" in Test Cricket.
SOON RE-APPEARS.
Remarkable was the change in Don Bradman when his cheery smile vanished at the Sydney Cricket Ground, where he was bowled for a "duck" by Griffiths in the Fifth Teat match against the West Indies.
The champion batsman's usual smile had been supplanted by a scowl of intense, almost painful, disappointment as be retreated to the pavilion on the shattering of his wicket; his brows were knit in disgust at his failure. The world's most prolific scorer had rogistered his first "duck" in Test cricket.
By the time the match was over Don's smile, however, had return- ed, and, making his way through the cheering crowd in the mem- bers' stand, he was one of the first to congratulate G. C. Grant and his successful eleven on their victory.
A promising athlete has no need for either alcohol or tobacco. They cannot possibly do his game any good, and they may do it harm. So if he really possesses the ambition to hit the heights, he will do well to cut them both out, and to take care to keep himself fit in every way he can-Archie Compston,
