SHIP THAT WAS FORGOTTEN.

Miss Carstair's Bid for... River Clyde that Won World's Record. Fame in the Dardanelles

Under the heading "Segrave's, Speed Rival" the Daily Express in mail week-before Sir H. Segrave's eDath-published the following article by its motoring

Mr. correspondent,

Harold Pemberton.

Cowes, 1.0.W.

Fifteen years ago, when the gallant attempt of those on board the steamer River Clyde to land on the Gallipoli const was the admiration of the whole world, the unassuming cargo steamer was described as "the, Ship of Undying Memory."

CUTTY SARK FOR THE SEA AGAIN.

Atlantic Crossing in Prospect.

London, June 22, Sails are being made for the famous clipper Cutty Sark which is now serving as a training ship at Falmouth.

The owner, Cap-

tain Dowman, proposes to make a trial sail to the Clyde to test the vessel's capabilities for navigat- ing deeper seas. Then, perhaps,

vessel may

proceed to America, where a magnificent wel- come is assured.

With Estelle V. Miss Carstairs hopes to beat the world's water speed record which Sir Henry Segrave is also attacking on Lake Windermere in about ten days' time, and with both boats she hopes either to win the British International Trophy back from the United States in August or to help Sir Henry to do so.

Yet nobody took uny notice when she changed hands the Spain a few months ago, and now that she has changed her name also the fact passes equally quietly.

Sunday, 10th August,

This is Miss Carstair's last big water adventure. As she sat in the stern of Estelle IV., peering through a forest of stack pipes rising from two 300 h.p. engines, she explained rather sadly that her hobby was costing too much. Her attempts to win back covet- ed records from the United States of America in British boats must have cost her already more than £100,000. And about £25,000 worth of motor-boats were stored in the little shipyard...

She is all the more determined, in view of her retirement, to make one great final bid for the world's record and the trophy, and I imagine that Sir Henry is go- ing to have a worthy rival.

to the

Constant Target. The breakdown of the floating bridge prevented the scheme be- ing carried out in its entirety, but there was no minimising the gal lantry with which the attempt was made, and Commander Unwin, among others, won his Victoria Cross for it.

All through the Dardanelles ex pedition she remained in position, welcome shade to tired troops but a constant target for the enemy.

A ROTTERDAM LLOYD STANDARD SHIP.

A new motor cargo ship of the "Kota" class has been launched from the Fijenoord Yard, for the Rotterdam Lloyd S.S. Co. The deadweight capacity of the Kota Agoeng, as the vessel is named, is 9,500 tons, the length and beam respectively being 448 ft. 4 ina and 60 ft. 6 ins.
