His Reply.
During a history lesson the teacher pointed out to the class that a surname often indicated the trade of the ancestors of those who bore the name.
He gave the obviously simple examples of Smith, Taylor, Baker, and others.
Then he questioned one of the boys: "What were your ancestora, Webb?"
Little Tommy Webb thought hard for a few seconds, then de- ciding to have a pôt shof, he piped out, "Spiders, sir?"
Tramp: I ain't had a bite to-day, Bir. -

Little Dick: "It was such a long time before my turn, came to bo waited on that I forgot what it was you wanted."
Irate Mamma: "Then why didn't you come home and find out?
Little Dlek: "I was afraid if I left I'd lose my turn."
The Explanation.
"If you please, mother," asked Clarence, aged ten, "will you kind- Wrongly lend me a pencil?"
"Johnny," said "his mother severely, "someone has taken a big piece of cake out of the pantry." Johnny blushed guiltly.
"Oh, Johnny" exclaimed the mother. "I did not think it was in you!"
"It isn't all," replied the boy. "Part of it's in Elsie."
Alice A-Weeping.
The other day my little sister, aged seven, asked father what was wrong with an uncle of ours.
"Paralysis." father replied. "Just fancy," she said, "we have a aong at school about that," and she commenced to sing in a mono- tonous tone: "Poor Allce in a-weep- ing, a-weeping."
What Mood.
Teacher (during grammar lea- son) The cow was taken into the field. What mood?
Bright Pupil: The cow!
"But," said Mamma, "I left a pen and ink for you to do your lessons, with on the nursery table. Why don't you use that instead of a pencil?"
"Well, you see," Clarence ex- plained, "I want a pencil to write and ask the editor how to remove ink stalne from a carpet."
Punctuation.
"Father,
asked eight-year-old Alice, "are you good at punctual
tlun 7"
"Yes," replied the father.
"Well, tell me, please, how would you punctuate, "The wind blew a pestal order round the corner"7",
"Why, Alice, I would simply put fell stop at the end of the sen- tener."
"I wouldn't,” said Alice: mi- chievously. "I would make a dash after the postal order."
"Doesn't Mean Anything."
Mother: This is your new nurse, Peter. Come and give her a kiss.
Peter: I don't mind giving her a kiss, but it doesn't mean anything,
us far as I am concerned.

A SCOUT'S BRAVERY.
The Chief Scout. Lord Baden- Powell, has received the following letter from New Scotland Yard:
"I am directed by the Commis sioner of Police of the Metropolia to acquaint you that on March 2 Mr. George Edward Eales, Scout- master of the 25th St. Pancras Troop of Boy Scouts, saw a man leave the New Church, Argyle- square, with a parcel.. On being observed, the man approached Mr. Eales with an open razer in his hand. Mr. Eales barred the man and sent a Scout for a police
