Be Restored.

The Dean and Chapter of Wor- cester Cathedral have undertaken the restoration of the tomb of King John, which is a conspicuous feature in the choir of tho

YOUR SWING MUST FIT YOUR FIGURE—AND YOUR PHYSIQUE. | cathedral.

At the first tee of a famous golf club the other day, I saw the start of a frienby match.

The senior competitor was an old man-bent and no longer supple, but young enough at seventy to take up golf. The junior competitor seemed to be his grand-daughter, slim, cer- tainly not twenty, and with charm in her swing rather than strength.

Am that is the problem of the professional.

Golf is a game that does not exact a conformity to type from its cham- Dions Plus golfers have weighed ainetoen stone-there is at least one of that size to-day; others have cited the beans at less than ten Some people take up the game-bo- tore muscular development has real- ly begun, and others when the limbs are, stiffening.

It is clear that people at opposite extremes of physiqué caunot exploit the same swing.

First-class profèssionals recognise this when teaching personally.

written about Much they have golf, however, suggests that there are only two ways to hit a golf ball; the upright swing and the flat swing. I know at least one other way--the straight punch. Consider the members of the average golf club. Some obviously began the game young. and employ a full swing. Others have clearly begun later, and are playing to a ten handicap with a driving swing that is more like a mashie shot.

played with a minimum of body movement and a firm wrist. The player stands well over the ball and is not tempted to take his eye off it as he is when he swings a driver. Nor does he get his body through first, because he need not move his body.

Yet the mashie shot, after all, is only a short version of the modern drive.

Accuracy the Vital Factor. Thut is my advice to the new- comer to golf. Take out a mashie and a

The Dean points out that its shabbiness is emphasised by trast with the Beauchamp and Wylde tombs in the nave, which have lately had their ancient colouring restored.

In a letter to the Dean, Lord Stamfordham expresses the in- terest of His Majesty the King in the suggested restoration and re- colouring of the tomb and ex- preases full approval of the pro- posed work.

In this way, work back to the tee and the driver, giving yourself plenty of wooden club work through the fairway with a spoon first.

The vital factor, in the end, is accuracy.

It Is a fact that many of these men who punch the ball along with

tance of the green in two shots at a in all but the very best company. 400 yards hole is 'easier than sink- with those who swing on classieing the ball in three shots after Brea.

Yet a girl of eighteen would that. Physique counts for nothing in the magic circle of fifty yards round the hole; it is all accuracy then.

And that is where matches

results at all by this method, because she would naturally tack strength in the forearms. She must depend on awing for the dis tanye she achieves, and if her swing

is vell made, and her timing accur ate, he will not be unduly handicap- ned by lack of physical strength.

Let me make my views on this subject of swing plain before going further.

The Ever Important Swing.. The best way to learn to drive a golf ball is to study the swing of,

the great players,

Experience has proved this the perfect way to secure maximum dis- tance and maximum accuracy with

a golf ball An early generation of golfers taught itself the diakult technique by trial and error; the

newcomer to golf to-day can learn it by instruction from a profes. alonal.

An upright swing the truly classical style-sits well on a tall, alim player. A flatter swing can be used by the player of shorter build.

A man who takes to the game later in life may no longer have the suppleness for the full awing. If he is wise, he will not break his heart attempting the impossible. He will swing as far as he comfort- ably can, especially in the follow through, and concentrate on achley. ing a useful length and great ac- curacy,

But put the youngest novice on a putting green with the most famous professional, and give each a putt; from lea foot range, and the odds on the professional are not so long not one thousandth as long as that he will outdrive the 'begin ner from the tee, for that is nearly a certainty as anything in this world.

My experience is that the friend- Hest club for the newcomer to golf is the mashie.

The Mashie. The mashie-so frequently reviled by the mature golfer works well for the beginner. The reason for this is that there is more hit and less theory aboat masble shots.

Piroting may be a positive dis- advantage, and wristwork is at a discount. The mashle shot is a hit

are won and lost.

That is why players are wrong in beginning the game by learning to

drive.

The Mental Element, Driving, the easiest shot in the game for the expert, is the most difficult for the beginner. The long club seems unwieldy, the ball far away, and the body movements a kind of complicated and sacred rite made for no special reason at the altar of the Great God Golf. Later, the novice learns better, but he has Pegged his progress back by months. The mental element has to be considered, too. .

Nothing is more disheartening than to hear the professional say, "Watch me," and then see him clout the ball two hundred yards. or more without an effort; and then hear him say, "Now you do that," and find yourself unable to shake the ball off its tee at all.

Anybody must develop an in- feriority complex. That is bad at any game, and it makes a fatal start at golf—(China Mail Copy- right.)

No metallic lead could be de tected in the deposits on the pluga, and certain plugs, of which the metal portion is tinc-coated, were free from signs of rusting, although there was marked corrosion on other plugs not so treated.

The valves were of composite type, with cast-iron heads and steel stems, and after running on treated petrol were found to be coated with a deposit of lead oxides, inter- mingled with oxide of iron. Chemical testa deßnitely proved the presence of chloride of iron and bromide of iron, and owing to the presence of chloride of iron corrosion was mark- ed.
