THE TECHNIQUE OF THE SHORT HOLE.'
Nowadays the designer of golf-that the designer of any courses is compelled to make long holes easier than they were before the increasing popularity of the rame brought the problem of how to deal with week-end congestion,
The 500-yard hole on a modern course presents few difficulties to the player who drives a long ball.
"Tiger country" has been cut back and cut down until it has lost its terrors. Fairways are picturesque ly described as a mile wide. Bunk cry are inconvenient but they cause the golfer little anxiety unless the ball lies very badly.
But to compensate for lost finesse at long holes, short holes are more numerous and more trappy.
Elusive Threes.
Many modern courses have four or five short holes, and these three bogeys can be made to call for more skill in the securing than fours and fives at the lunger holes.
I was playing recently over miniature course.

Short holes call for a technique of their own in the playing.
Too many golfers put down a ball, take a mid-iron, and let fire.
This is the wrong way to play a short hole..
Every player must first take thought, for the tes shot is also the approach shot, and the technique of the two is brought into play. The distance must be secured but not exceeded. The ball must be dropped on the green so that it will run towards the hole, not fall away from it.
Distances are deceptive at short Thoy are usually uphill or down, or, if they are level, there is likely to be a valley between.

Get There!
A The contingency of failidre has to be considered. A bad shot on one ex-side may put the ball beyond hope of recovery. On the other the path may be clear for a chip shot up to the pin.
A miniature course, it may be plained, is a course made up of nine or eighteen three-bagay holes. The player is allowed a shot to put the ball on the green and then two putts,
A mid-iron may be the club for The popularity of these courses as the hole, judged by standards of dis- a diversion for non-golfers--parti-tance only, but with a favouring cularly at holiday times-has led the wind the, player may "get there" alter generation of players to regard with a mashie, while, with the wind them as something apart from true in the wrong direction, the safest golf. At the recent opening of one minialure course, some distinguish- ed players found difficulty in manag- ing eighteen holes in an average of threes.
Take Time!
It is possible that they were not taking the effort very seriously, but if the miniature course were as sim- ple
