But several weeks were clipped from her vacation when Irving Thalberg cabled her to hit the salty trail for home P. D. Q.

Subsequently Miss Farnum and her husband, Maurice Barber, booked reser- vations on the "Ile de France." They departed Paris in taxi, allowing themselves more than time. The driver. however, lost his way. It was then too late to make the ship. Panicky, Dorothy cable the captain, whom she knew, requesting him to hold the boat if possible at such and such a point. She and her husband sped to a little fishing village, chartered a small sail- ing vessel and set forth to meet the "Te." They made it alright, but the tide was so great the little sailing vessel couldn't cdee sufficiently close to the big liner. The captain never suspected she was aboard the nervous boat toss- ing nearby and seeing no other vessel (in sight ordered full steam ahead.

Wallace Beery might well fill the bill of a modern Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. To the picture-loving public, he's probably the most versatile person in Hollywood to-day. He plays comedy equally as well as villainous roles. Persons going to a theatre never know just what type of a Wallace Beery to expect on the screen. They do know it won't be the one they saw last time.

Like many other actors, Wallace Beery was born on a farm. His parents lived in Missouri and bis first éducation was in a one-room country schoolhouse. One of his classmates was Jesse James, Jr.

It was during a Christmas pro-) grammer at this school that he first decided to become an actor. He did not merely express a desire to be one. He said he was going to be one. In the years that follow- ed, through high school and after, that one thought never left him. He was going to be an actor and nothing in the world could have dampened his desire.

Wallace Beery has fulfilled the! decision made during his school days. He has herded elephanta and clowned in circuses. He has sung starring roles in musical comedies. He's played everything on the screen from Swedish cham- bermaids to Keystone "cops." He's appeared in the most villainous roles: in pictures. He's been the star of some of the funniest, comedies re corded by motion picture cameras.

Recently, Beery returned to character roles, He is now playing the part of a jovial bad man in Paramount's production of "Stains of Sand." Jean- Arthur, Phillips
