Borothy, Farnum, the M. G. writer, who is attractive enough to make the lenses any day, has, just returned from a curtailed jaurt abroad. Dorothy ex- pected to be gone three months. But several weeks were clipped from her vacation when Irving Thalberg cabled her to hit the salty trail for home P. D. Q.

Subsequently Miss Farnum and her husband, Maurice Barber, booked reser- vations on the "Ile de France." They departed Paris in taxi, allowing themselves more than time. The driver. however, lost his way. It was then too late to make the ship. Panicky, Dorothy cable the captain, whom she knew, requesting him to hold the boat if possible at such and such a point. She and her husband sped to a little fishing village, chartered a small sail- ing vessel and set forth to meet the "Te." They made it alright, but the tide was so great the little sailing vessel couldn't cdee sufficiently close to the big liner. The captain never suspected she was aboard the nervous boat toss- ing nearby and seeing no other vessel (in sight ordered full steam ahead.

Thereupan Dorothy wept bitterly. A few days later she and her husband sailed aboard the "Paris." In spite of the S. O. S. call to return home, it may be a little while before she goes to work on her next M. G. M. story. Hie, ho! Some folks have all the adventures. Pardon me for chewing my fingers,

You Never Know Some ten years ago a chap named Russell Birdwell handled publicity for Mary and Jack Pickford. He engaged a stenographer named Alva White. One day Mrs. Pickford came into the office, espied Miss White and informed Mr. Birdwell if his stenographer didn't wear more clothes he would have to discharge her. Mr. Birdwell delivered the message. The next day Miss White

Such is the life of Wallace Beary, who has the leading role in Zane Grey's new best seller, Stairs of Sand," now being filmed, at the Paramount West Coast Studios."

"I've been killed thirty-five times in the past sixteen years," Beery declares," killed by men, by animals, by swordfish, by sharks, by cannibals-in fact, I've killed myself a couple of times, but still I go on." Wallace Beery might well fill the bill of a modern Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. To the picture-loving public, he's probably the most versatile person in Hollywood to-day. He plays comedy equally as well as villainous roles. Persons going to a theatre never know just what type of a Wallace Beery to expect on the screen. They do know it won't be the one they saw last time.

Like many other actors, Wallace Beery was born on a farm. His parents lived in Missouri and bis first éducation was in a one-room country schoolhouse. One of his classmates was Jesse James, Jr.

It was during a Christmas pro-) grammer at this school that he first decided to become an actor. He did not merely express a desire to be one. He said he was going to be one. In the years that follow- ed, through high school and after, that one thought never left him. He was going to be an actor and nothing in the world could have dampened his desire.

Wallace Beery has fulfilled the! decision made during his school days. He has herded elephanta and clowned in circuses. He has sung starring roles in musical comedies. He's played everything on the screen from Swedish cham- bermaids to Keystone "cops." He's appeared in the most villainous roles: in pictures. He's been the star of some of the funniest, comedies re corded by motion picture cameras.

Recently, Beery returned to character roles, He is now playing the part of a jovial bad man in Paramount's production of "Stains of Sand." Jean- Arthur, Phillips

R. Holmes, Fred Koher and Chester Conklin are featured in the picture.

BEETHOVEN LETTER

PUBLICATION OF INTERESTING DOCUMENT

The Neues Wiener Journal, of Vienna, brings to light a hitherto unedited letter of Beethoven's, written to his publisher, Anton Diabelli, concerning the "Thirty- Three Variations," published in 1823. Besthoven had apparently to be constantly urged to complete the work. It was in answer to one of the publisher's admonitions that he wrote the letter In ques tion:

Being so very busy, I could not oblige you up to now; but I assure you that I shall give you preference. You shall be the first to receive the Variations, but I cannot yet fix the day and the hour. You shall also have the variations for four handa as soon as possible. I shall come to see you in a few days, when we shall dis cuss everything - Your friend, Beethoven,

London, July 4.

It was delightful to see Mite. Thamer Karsavina dancing again with the Diaghileff ballet yesterday afternoon at Covent Garden in a part of which she was the "creator" and in which she has never been surpassed — the. Columbine "Petroushika."
