On July 15 the 'Java-China- Japan Lijn's as. Tikandi" (Cap- tain Hillegaard) ran into a typhoon and was badly batlered when 150 miles East of Balin- tang. Dutch East Indies while on a voyage to Yokohama. It was impossible for the ship to turn in the teeth of the storm and return to Balintang, there was alternative but for the ship to fight its way through the typhoon to Hong Kong as the nearest port. The 1,000-mile trip which they undertook speaks well for the de- termination of the Captain and twelve Dutch Officers of the ship who had to fight the storm alone, as all of the twenty-six Chinese semen refused work.
