"TRUTH AND SOVIET INFLUENCE IN CHINA..

THE DOSSER TRIAL.

In the face of a case like this no reasonable being can doubt that what is going on in China owes a great deal to instigation from Moscow, states "Truth," .com- menting on the Dosser trial in Shanghai It is not likely that the individual arrested at. What is revealed in the Shanghai proceedings is a furtive foreign conspiracy, which tooke foolish enough when exposed by police proceedings, but can do unlimited mischief ns long as it works underground. is due the special anti-British char- acter of the present movement.

Anti-foreign outbreaks are no novelty in China, and half-a-dozen causes are at work in producing the chaos that now reigns in the sea- board provincos. But for the best part of sixty years Chinese and British have been living together in umity in all these provinces; a cer- tain amount of mutual confidence and respect has grown up, and the Chinese who have been in contact with us have come to appreciate that we are useful and profitable to them and have no unfriendly designs ugainst them or their country. That the British should be singled out- for viclent hostility before all other foreigners is in itself evidence that Chinese minds have been artificial- Duchess D Acrwly poisoned against us and the ap pearance of the same state of mind in Hongkong as well as Peking in- dicates a widely working hostile. organisation. On the other hand, for defensive purposes we are now tied to the other Powers who are parties to the last international agreement, and who appear in- capable of noting together with any effect. We are the principal sufferers materially as well na morally, and at the same time we can do nothing to help curselves. The position seems to call for very strong remonstrances from our Gov- ernment to its partners, or allies, or whatever they are to be called; but the strongest remonstrances of all seem to be due to the Soviet Gor- ernment of Moscow, which engages in this hostile conspiracy in the East for while professing its desire amicable understanding and com- mercial intercourse in the West.
