In consequence of the firing at the Canron-Kowloon express trais in Pingwoo, on Sunday night by Kwongsi soldiers. Inspector Boulger and 2 passe of European Sergeants and Indian constables, were sent out on post dury at the Samchen horder fast night.
Although there was much firing during the night, in Chinese territory. nothing happened on the border, and, incoming trains from Cantos were not interfered with.
After a very wearisome night the guard was this morning relieved by a company of the 22nd Punjabis and some Wilts men. It is understood that the border will be guarded day and right by military and police guards antil the situation in Chinese territory is less disturbed.
The Chinese soldiers evidently re- ceived information that the frontier was being guarded, for they abstained from any offensive action alf last night.

The Times reports that an agree ment has been concluded between Messrs. Alfred Holt and Co. (man- agers of the Blue Funnel Line), the Canadian Government Merchant Marine, Ltd... and the Canadian National Railways for a joint seam- ship service between Vancouver and the Far East, each steamship interest to provide an equal number of vessels for the new service. In accordance with the vagjcement the Cered National Railways and the Canadian Government Merchant Marine, Ltd., | will be represented in the Far East by Messrs. Butterfield and Swire, the sgeats for the Holt interests, so that the Canadian undertakings will secure the advantage of an old and powerful organisation.
It is pointed out that the scheme is a remarkable, example of a working arrangement made in the joint fater- ests of a Government and a private undertaking. The further point is made that Messrs. Holt, who have at large business with the Pacific Coast ports of the United States, may have been inäuenced in their decision to ́develop the trade with British Colum- bia by the discriminatory measures against shipping owned outside the United States contained in recent legislation in the United States.
