DANGEROUS TRAVELLING.
BRITISH BORDER GUARD.
CONTÍNUOUS WATCH TO BE KEPT.
In consequence of the firing at the Canron-Kowloon express trais in Pingwoo, on Sunday night by Kwongsi soldiers. Inspector Boulger and 2 passe of European Sergeants and Indian constables, were sent out on post dury at the Samchen horder fast night.
Although there was much firing during the night, in Chinese territory. nothing happened on the border, and, incoming trains from Cantos were not interfered with.
After a very wearisome night the guard was this morning relieved by a company of the 22nd Punjabis and some Wilts men. It is understood that the border will be guarded day and right by military and police guards antil the situation in Chinese territory is less disturbed.
The Chinese soldiers evidently re- ceived information that the frontier was being guarded, for they abstained from any offensive action alf last night.

A
Inspector Cockle this morning -charged a Chinese before Magistrate Smith with unlawfaily returning to the Colony yesterday, after having bees banished on September 23 last, for a period of ten years.

country.
#Sertence of nine months' imprison- ment with hard labour and four hours' stocks in lieu of the last day was passed.
NEW STEAMER SERVICE.
JOINT INTERESTS.
VANCOUVER TO THE FAR EAST.
لوار
The Times reports that an agree ment has been concluded between Messrs. Alfred Holt and Co. (man- agers of the Blue Funnel Line), the Canadian Government Merchant Marine, Ltd... and the Canadian National Railways for a joint seam- ship service between Vancouver and the Far East, each steamship interest to provide an equal number of vessels for the new service. In accordance with the vagjcement the Cered National Railways and the Canadian Government Merchant Marine, Ltd., | will be represented in the Far East by Messrs. Butterfield and Swire, the sgeats for the Holt interests, so that the Canadian undertakings will secure the advantage of an old and powerful organisation.
It is pointed out that the scheme is a remarkable, example of a working arrangement made in the joint fater- ests of a Government and a private undertaking. The further point is made that Messrs. Holt, who have at large business with the Pacific Coast ports of the United States, may have been inäuenced in their decision to ́develop the trade with British Colum- bia by the discriminatory measures against shipping owned outside the United States contained in recent legislation in the United States.

INTERPORT CRICKET CRITICISM.
[To the Editor of the " China Mall."}
Sir.—May I encroach on your paper to answer what I consider very unfair comments by "Thrown Out" re a fur- ther trial of Alexander for interport honours. The comment reads as fol lows:-" I am satisfied that Alexan- der is not the bowler that we want and I do not consider in worth | trial," ·
Now. Sir. Alexander is a young pizyer and would with a little coach- ing turn out an asset to any team in Hongkong both for Bowling. Barting and Ficking. bat such severe critic
ism as "Thrown. Out's” is likely to inke the heart our of any youngster.
The Bowling of Alexander in both matches compared favourably with all
the others with the exception of Major
Edward's and Mr. Wodehouse's. "At haring. I consider he did not get a fair it as the first match he did not bai and the second match was put in last and scored 9 not out.
