Kirau when he first joined the estate coolie force was just a horny- handed Bajau from a neighbouring kampong. Unlike most Bajaus he bad a streak of carefulness in his composition and did not spend his money with the usual Bajau reckless- He served part of his time as an Assistant's "boy" and learned to read and write Romanised Malay. Leaving after a few months he again took up tapping and soon became a really good band at the job: not long after he was promoted to Mandor, and proved a good one. Salleh was of another kidney. He was a bar.dsome athletic young, Bajau, fair skinned with a smiling face. He was reckless and improvident and constantly in trouble, but undoubtedly he had "a way with the girls". Salleh had at length paid off his debt and was contemplating leaving the estate in the meantime he improved the shiring hour by making love to Kirau's wife.
About this time Kirau had signed on again and had got the usual advances, with permission to spend two days in Jesselton. He returned duly with the following. One pair American patent leather shoes, with bulging toes, bread silk laces and a lovely shine. Two pairs silk (imitation) socks, sky blue in colour and a pair of Paris garters to match. Two bajus, like Joseph's coat, of many colours, alt clashing. Two pairs of white shorts, one with red down the seams, and the other with blue. Three battles of scent. Now, a scent as some one has said of a cigar falls into one of three classes, the Good, the Bad, and the Incredi- bly Appalling. Kirau's scent was of the third class.
He appeared the next day and the following days dressed in new raiment and he was a proud man: but most proud was he of his shoes, those beautiful shining shoes that made all the coolics green with envy. I knew there would be trouble on his return and awaited it with foreboding, On his return he came up iramediately; I expected to see him wildly excited but he looked crushed as one on whose mind there was an intolerable burden of trouble. I spoke to him and told him not to make 2 "kachau" about it,and finished
trouble worth while making by telling him that it was hardly about a woman who did not care for him. He replied "I don't care about my wife running away. I never cared much for her, but that beast Salleh has stolen my new shoes." Then in a voice broken by emotion he said "Tuan, how they shone, and Salleh is such a careless man. They. wi'l be ruined by now.".
The A. D. O. tried the case about a week later (one of assault and battery) and Kirau is saving up for another pair of shoes.-Borneo Herald.
