Mr. Kyle had with him $13,000 in silver to be taken west for the use of his own party and the two surveying parties which had preceded them. It was, of course, won known to every bas that the party was carrying a large sum of money, it being impossible to hide this fact. magistrate,
The party passed Wayangimien at pan, on the 3rd lust. The magistrate Lia advised the party to stop there over night there was no siltsge of any importance near,

party pronceded westward, reaching village endled Hsieh Tien in the evening, where they spent the night. Early the next morning the party started out and about 12 li away from Haien Ties they passed the village of Chang Pa Chuang, where a band of robbers was having breakfast. These robbers had been chased there by soldiers after the.captare of a wealthy family named Tung. They allowed the party to pass on unmolested, but after it had gone a ocuple of li they
got up and started a pursuit, opening fire froin behind. The Chinese in the party urged the foreigners to run ahead and make for the next village, Ho Cung Choasig, which they did. But before they got there they came across another baad of robbers from the south hills, who opened are upon them. They therefore decided to surrender, thinking that the robbers would be unlisfied with the miney and the goods. But they took the two Americans and one of the Chinese engineers named Wu and made for the mountains with the money and gooda.
The soldiers who attacked the bandits the right before gaye chase, but the robbery put the foreigners between themselves and the soldiers and used them as a screen, Whereupon the soldiers desisted from fring, for fear of hitting the for eigners. Ho Tang-chao and the others
