87. The motor workshops were kept fully employed on maintenance and repairs to Government motor vehicles. Two motor fire engines, three motor ambulances, one Police emergency van, six refuse lorries, and four meat vans were thoroughly overhauled and painted. Three Public Works Department steam rollers were also overhauled and prepared for the Marine Surveyor's inspection.

88. Way and works have been maintained in good order during the year.
89. All redundant structures were demolished.
90. Double wire signalling with non-trailable point mechanism was installed at Yaumati Station in place of the single wire system worked by four pointsmen from the loop points. The signal location was improved to enable both 'homes' to be visible to the station staff. The annual savings in staff wages, rendered possible by the new layout, will amount to more than 13% of its capital cost.
91. Taipo Market Halt was converted into a crossing and train token station to increase the capacity of the line, and to speed up train movements.
92. After a period of eight years the track inside Beacon Hill Tunnel, 7212 feet in length, was relaid with medium manganese rails and hardwood sleepers. The renewal was necessitated by weakness in the web and the foot of the rail rather than wear in the head, the average loss in weight being approximately 18 per cent.
93. The road level crossings at Sheung Shui and Miles 18 and 19 were replaced with reinforced concrete slabs with chequered steel plate covers. This was the second part of a three years programme for the modernisation of all road level crossings.
94. An open tank plant for creosoting sleepers was installed at Hung Hom by the Locomotive Department, and 3360 Kempas sleepers were treated during the year with a mixture of 50 per cent creosote and 50 per cent Diesel fuel. The average impregnation was 6.4 lbs. per cubic foot, and the average total cost of a sleeper $3.94.
95. Bridges Nos. 10, 47 and 48 were reconditioned, and twelve bridges were painted.
96. A large scale experiment on weed killing was conducted in May and June, half a ton of a substance used by the Southern Railway being employed. The location of the test was the
