79. The condition of the boilers of "B" class engines. Nos. 9 and 11 are far from satisfactory, and early renewal may be necessary.
80. Oxy-acetylene welding was introduced in April for the purpose of fitting new ends on boiler tubes and for general plate work. Considerable economy was achieved by its use, as the cost per tube was only 90c. as against $9 for a new tube.
81. Motor Coach No. 1 was redesigned and rebuilt as a first class parlour observation and lounge railcar. Both the engine and driving bogie were thoroughly overhauled and special anti-vibrating blocks were fitted. The exterior of the coach was streamlined to below the bogies, thus lowering the centre of gravity and increasing its stability. The interior was divided into two compartments separated by a vestibule, the forward end being fitted out as a smoking lounge with a cocktail bar, and the rear or observation portion as a parlour car. The colour scheme was silver and blue, and the interior teak woodwork French polished.
82. Both the kitchen and the pantry of first class "Dining Car" No. 39 were removed and the coach was fitted up as a Buffet Car. A cocktail bar with seven revolving seats was placed in the lounge portion, and arrangements were provided to enable the coach to be "slipped". Two features call for special mention:
(a) The provision of high pressure gas to feed a small cooking stove.
(b) The fitting of an intake fan at the end of the coach, the air passing through a viscous air filter before being regulated through thermo-tank punkah louvres.
83. The experiment of painting the roof and bogies of a first class coach with aluminium paint was tried out during the year. Careful checks were kept on costs, appearance, and inside temperature. The results proved so satisfactory that it was decided to standardize the method.
84. Sixteen coaches have been overhauled and painted, one of them receiving a complete overhaul including re-upholstering.
85. Fans were fitted to eight third class coaches.
86. Seven 30-ton wagons, four water wagons, and six 15-ton wagons were overhauled and painted.
