IV. MECHANICAL ENGINEERING.
74. All locomotives, carriages, wagons, motor cars, machinery, tools and plant, were maintained in an efficient condition during the year.
75. The programme of fitting the motion parts of all engines with grease lubrication was completed.
76. The three "C" class tender locomotives were completely stripped down, thoroughly overhauled and painted before being handed over to the Chinese Section on April 30th. On the transference of these engines, the services of 1 foreman, 6 drivers, 10 firemen, 15 artisans and 13 coolies were terminated.
77. The haulage of the six through expresses and fast trains north of Shum Chun was undertaken by the Chinese Section on May 1st, and the two "D" class locomotives were in consequence reconverted into "A" class to enable them to be used on the local service.
78. Major repairs to "A" and "B" class locomotives are tabulated below:-
