126. Mr. I. B. Trevor, Traffic Manager and Chief Storekeeper, acted as Manager from September 2nd to September 30th during the absence of Mr. R. D. Walker on leave. The latter officer visited the Nanking-Shanghai, the Tientsin-Pukow, the Peiping-Liaoning, and the Peiping-Suiyuen railways, September, and made a tour of inspection of the Canton-Hankow Railway in November.
127. Mr. A. J. C. Taylor, who was appointed to act during Mr. J. Morris' leave of absence, was confirmed in the post of Chief Accountant when Mr. J. Morris retired on pension on February 1st.
128. Mr. C. D. Lambert, Chief Mechanical Engineer, left the Colony on July 22nd and retired on pension as from December 14th. Mr. J. Smith, Assistant Mechanical Engineer, acted in the vacated post and was confirmed as Chief Mechanical Engineer as from December 15th.
129. The Railway Night School, which had been running since 1921 at a cost of $1,500 per annum, was closed with effect from January 1st. The results which have been obtained from this school during the past few years cannot be regarded as satisfactory.
130. Job analysis has enabled savings to be effected in personal emoluments. Eight redundant monthly paid posts have been abolished. Six additional daily paid employees have been engaged, but their wages have been offset either by economy in operating or by increased receipts from work performed by them for outside parties.
131. Discipline was improved by the re-introduction of the "fine and suspension" system in place of the Brown system of "discipline by record" which had been in use since 1919.
182. The Railway Recreation Club's membership totalled 178 at the close of the year. During June, the first annual athletic meeting was held at the Club grounds. All departments were represented in the various events, which were keenly contested. The Locomotive Department won the aggregate challenge shield, narrowly beating the Traffic Department by 11 points. Football, tennis and basket ball continue to be popular with members.
