121. The gang organization has been revised to ensure continuity in the supply of satisfactory headmen. Keymen have been made superior to all platelayers, and two posts of assistant headmen have been created. The latter are employed as sub-gangers under the No. 1 Headman in charge of the special gang.

122. Other permanent way maintenance improvements were as follows:

(a) The joints were squared where creep exceeded 3 feet, and 4,000 Henggi rail anchors were fitted.

(b) British made "Thompson" safety track jacks were standardised in place of the old Belgian type of rail lifter which projected above rail level.

(c) Runouts of superelevation were adjusted to a cant gradient of 1 in 864 or 1" per rail length.

(d) The embankment south of Taipo Market yard was strengthened by widening.

123. Stores were well kept and maintained during the year.

124. Every effort was made to economise and considerable saving was effected by taking advantage of the high rate of the dollar and purchasing in bulk from the United Kingdom. On one indent on the Crown Agents containing 162 items, a saving of $3,021.00, or 34% over the local contract rates, was achieved.
