137. New Central British School and Site Formation:— This work was referred to in paragraph 146 of last year's Report. The levelling of the whole site and approach road was continued until its completion in April. The total quantity of excavation removed was 481,500 cubic yards. Temporary channelling for the protection of the site was constructed and the banks on the south and east sides of the playing area were turfed. The following mains were laid to enable a water supply to the school to be given:— 800 feet of 8" cast iron main in Argyle Street South of the Kowloon Hospital, 800 feet of 4″ wrought iron piping from Argyle Street, 190 feet of 1¼″ wrought iron piping in the school grounds.
The erection of the school building was carried out by Mr. W. A. Cornell, F.R.I.B.A., F.S.I., for Government. Tenders were received on February 6th, 1935, and the Building Contract was signed by The Cheong Hing Company on March 14th. Building operations commenced on April 1st, 1935, and the foundation stone was laid at the North-east corner of the building by His Excellency Sir William Peel, K.C.M.G., K.B.E., LL.D., on May 15th, 1935. Good progress was maintained throughout the year.
