London. The survey for the Access Road from Pineapple Pass to the Gorge Dam was completed and further surveys of the low gaps and for camp sites carried out. Messrs. Sir Alexander Binnie, Son & Deacon, who submitted a report to Government on the 2nd Section of the Shing Mun Valley Scheme in 1931, were appointed as Consulting Engineers for the design and construction of the Gorge Dam and on the arrival of their Resident Engineer in November the relevant surveys, documents and drawings were handed over to him. During the latter months of the year plans were prepared for a camp of wooden huts for the housing of workmen comprising dormitory huts, huts containing mess room, kitchen and bathhouse accommodation and detached Latrine huts. In addition the following were planned—quarters of timber construction for European Overseers and a brick building giving office accommodation, the latter to be erected on Chatham Road, Kowloon. Tenders were obtained for all of the above buildings near the end of the year.

Gorge Dam, Access Road to Gorge Dam.—In order to expedite the construction of preliminary works in connection with the Gorge Dam, before the arrival of the Consulting Engineers' staff in the Colony in November, surveys and Contract documents for the construction of the Access Road to the Gorge Dam, which is an extension of the existing Access Road from Tsun Wan to Pineapple Pass, were prepared by this Department and in August a Contract for $62,275.75 was let to Messrs. Sang Tai & Co. Excellent progress with the works was made up to the time of handing them over to the Consulting Engineers in November.

202. Filtration Plant, 2nd Section.—This work was referred to in paragraph 294 of last year's Report. The Contract was satisfactorily completed on 16th May and the plant was brought into operation after satisfactory tests had been made. The period of maintenance expired in November and the Retention money was paid. A new Paterson Chloronome capable of chlorinating 10 million gallons per day was provided and installed. The outstanding instalments of Messrs. The Paterson Engineering Company's account for the supply of the plant were paid during the year.

The addition of this Section of the Filtration Plant, the first Section of which was constructed in 1927 and 1928 and was referred to in paragraph 229 (b) of the 1928 Report, now provides an installation with a total filtering capacity of ten million gallons per day.
