197. New Road to Wong Ma Kok Village. The contract for the construction of twenty feet wide approach road to the New Gaol site was awarded to Messrs. Lam Construction Co. on 15th March for a sum of $138,550.00.

SHING MUN VALLEY SCHEME 1ST SECTION.

198. Item Q. Gardens Service Reservoir.--This work was referred to in paragraph 293 of last year's Report. Excellent progress was made generally with the works and by the end of the year the majority of the concrete work for the reservoir itself was completed. Settlement of the main North and West walls occurred and these walls were satisfactorily strengthened by underpinning.

Further work included the reinstatement of the gardens necessitated by the erection of a service reservoir therein. The main items concerned are:-The formation of a flight of main approach steps and seats, the erection of a shelter, a fountain, a latrine and entrance gates. At the end of the year tenders had been received for the work and were under consideration.

199. Item R. Pipe Line for Item 'Q'. 24′′ supply main in Gardens Service Reservoir.-Reference to this work was made in paragraph 248 (f) on page 114 of the 1930 Report. The remainder of this work was commenced in August this year and, except for a short length in the Gardens laid in December, was completed in October. A cross connection to the City mains controlled by a 15" Sluice Valve was made at the junction of Wardley Street and steel, from this connection to the Inlet at the Gardens is 1,460 Queen's Road. The total length of the main, which is of mild steel, from this connection to Queen's Pier is 850 lineal feet making a total of 2,310 lineal feet.

In connection with this an 18" Distribution main from the Reservoir to Queen's Road via Zetland Street was laid. This work was commenced in October and completed in December, the total length of main which is of 18" cast iron being 1,268 lineal feet.

200. Preliminary Works.-This work was referred to in paragraph 289 of last year's Report. Work on the borings asked for by the Consulting Engineers last year was continued but owing to the Hong Kong Excavation Pile Driving and Construction Company going into liquidation, it was only possible to complete the eight borings at the site of the proposed Gorge Dam, the remaining five at Pineapple Pass being left for the Consulting Engineers to undertake later. Samples of the cores from the eight borings were dispatched to the Consulting Engineers in
