Improvements to Taipo Water Works.-Owing to the rapid development at Taipo Market during the past ten years, increasing difficulty has been experienced in maintaining adequate pressure, particularly to the higher situated houses within the supply area. Water Emergency.—To improve water distribution in congested districts during the water shortage, the following works were carried out:- 150 feet of 6″, 2,750 feet of 3″, 4,109 feet of 2½″, 10,000 feet of 2″ and 700 feet of 1½″ diameter wrought iron pipes were laid and 335 temporary street fountains were fixed in groups of five at sixty-seven points in the Colony.

In Kowloon, 10,521 feet of 2″ diameter wrought iron piping were laid and 155 temporary fountains in groups of five were erected.

196. New Goal at Wong Ma Kok.—This work was referred to in paragraph 255 of the Report for 1930. A Committee was appointed and selected the site at Wong Ma Kok as being the more suitable. Working drawings for the site formation were then prepared and trial pits dug at various positions to ascertain the nature of the ground for the foundations. During the year, circumstances arose which necessitated reconsideration of the site, and a revised layout plan was prepared showing sites for two separate Prisons for males and females, Staff Quarters, and a Police Training School on the alternative site near Stanley. The scheme was submitted to the Committee, and the layout plan and sites were approved by the Governor in Council on 8th December, 1932. Working drawings for the site formation were commenced; the resumption of certain agricultural lots in connection with the access road was carried out.
