48 B.H.P. when running at a full load speed of 970 revolutions per minute when supplied with 50 cycles, three phase, alternating current at a pressure of 350 volts. The switch gear is of the "Ellison" totally enclosed oil break Rotor and Stator control panel type. The whole of the bye-pass arrangement consists of spigot and socket, cast iron pipes and special castings connected to the 18" steel main at the suction and delivery branches by cast iron collars.

285. Item 9, Filtration Plant.-This work was referred to in paragraph 250 Item 9 of last year's Report. Good progress was made with the construction of the reinforced concrete beds and chemical house which were completed by the end of August. By the end of October the beds had been filled and all piping and machinery, etc. erected. After successful tests the beds were put into operation before the end of the year.

This plant which is of the Paterson Rapid Gravity Type has been erected within one of the old slow sand beds at the Elliot Filter Beds, and has a capacity of four million gallons per day. It consists of an Administration or Chemical House containing the chemical mixing and proportioning plant on the two upper floors and the pumps and compressors on the ground floor whilst the Upper Washwater Tank is carried on the roof. A covered operating gallery in which is situated all the automatic and hand controlling gear runs at right angles to the chemical house. On each side of this gallery is a series of four reinforced concrete rapid gravity filter beds each twenty-four feet by twelve feet under one series of which is situated the Lower Wash-water Tank. Before entering the filters the raw water is treated with Sulphate of Alumina and Lime and after treatment and filtration there is apparatus for sterilization of the filtered water by chlorine and the chloramine process. The filters are cleaned by agitation by compressed air followed by a backwash of filtered water.
